Up and Coming Pop Punk Bands | The View From Up Here

Today for our up and coming pop punk bands post, we're bringing to you The View From Up Here who hail from the US. The band have recently released their self-titled debut EP which is filled with acoustic pop punk jams. If you're a fan of bands like Modern Baseball or The Front Bottoms make sure you check these guys out...

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
We all go to The University of New Haven in Connecticut, USA, North America, Planet Earth, Milky Way Galaxy... but all grew up in different home towns throughout Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York.

HOW DID YOU GUYS FORM?
Andrew (vocals/acoustic) had been writing these songs for a while and looking for a band. We were all friends with each other from school and worked in a group for our studio recording class. Our project was to record and mix a cover of a song, and we chose to do a punk-ska version of “Sugar We’re Going Down” by Fall Out Boy. We had a lot of fun messing around with that, and when Andrew brought his songs to guitarist Michael Quick and drummer Dom Gubernat, they decided to work on them as a band. Gavin Stacey helped us track the project, and offered to play bass for us because we were looking for one. I guess that’s how everything really came together.

HOW DID YOU GUYS COME UP WITH YOUR BAND NAME?
The name comes from the idea that you’re looking down your own life, watching it happen from above. All of the songs on the EP were also written looking out of the upstairs bedroom window (the view that’s on the cover), so the name stuck for both the band and the EP.

DO YOU PREFER RECORDING OR PLAYING LIVE?
We’re all big fans of the recording process. It’s what we go to school to study, and it’s exciting to hear the songs come together but it can be stressful at times. There’s no better feeling than playing your own music live. It’s difficult to compare the energy you have to anything else. Whether you’re on a stage, or playing in a basement, it’s always a great time.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR DEBUT EP...
‘The View From Up Here’ is a concept album that illustrates growth from each one of the songs. The intro track, “The View From Up Here” (why not have a self-titled song on a self-titled, right?), and the next song “Williamsport” represent a phase of unsure adolescence. As you go through each of the songs, they start to revolve around the idea of a more worldly acceptance. Collectively, we wanted to bring a different color to the genre, incorporating the acoustic element while still having a big sound. It was mixed by Josh Welshman at Flux Studios and mastered by Sam Pura (TSSF & State Champs) at Panda Studios. We’re really proud of this.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SONG FROM YOUR DEBUT EP AND WHY?
Our favorites are split between two songs. The first would be the “50’s doowop punk song” (as Dom says) titled “It’s Okay Rose, Jack Was Getting Heavy”. The next would be “Beaten & Bruised”.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP FIVE FAVOURITE POP PUNK ALBUMS?
Our top 5 in no particular order are...

Tell All Your Friends - Taking Back Sunday
Catalyst - New Found Glory
The Greatest Generation - The Wonder Years
Seams & Stitches - With The Punches
College Dropout - Kanye West
