Casting Call For Short Film 'Straight Edge'

Here at Pop Punk UK, we're helping a group of film makers who are interested in making a short film about pop-punk. If you're interested in acting, or just fancy being an extra for a day make sure you check out their casting call below, bear in mind that no acting experience is necessary: 

WANT TO BE AN EXTRA IN A SHORT FILM WITH A POP-PUNK SOUNDTRACK?! 

NO ACTING EXPERIENCE NECESSARY ! WE ARE LOOKING FOR THE FOLLOWING:  

YOUNGER AGE GROUP POP PUNK FRIENDS  Must be 16+ but playing age of 13/15. Preferably dyed hair and piercings. These are the kids down the park drinking White Lightning with studded belts, band t-shirts and ripped Vans.  

OLDER AGE GROUP POP PUNK FRIENDS Preferably 18+. Preferably with dyed hair and piercings. These are the guys who bought the White Lightning for the younger crew!   

OR IF YOU WOULD BE INTERESTED IN A LEAD ROLE….  
DAN Must be 16+ but playing age of 13/14. Also, preferably dyed hair and piercings. Slightly under-developed, gangly and wide-eyed at the wonders of this new world he's just entered. He's quiet and insular, but quick to smile and get stuck in. However, beneath his naïve exterior is an underlying energy that hints at a magnetism and the possibility of actually being cool one day. He just needs to grow into his body and self a tad more.  

LOUISA Must be 16+ but playing age of 13/14. Also, preferably dyed hair and piercings. Bursting with sensuality, every look she gives is filled with a ton of sexual undertones. At ease in almost every situation, making friends at the drop of a hat, she was built for socialising. However, although so confident and selfassured, when she does lets her mature mask slip, the moments of innocence and naivety almost seem to surprise herself.   

CRAIG Preferably 18+ with dyed hair and piercings. Although not a pretty-boy with cut-glass cheekbones, he's dripping with charisma that makes you want to follow him to the ends of the earth. He looks like he's lived a difficult life and has a dangerous energy because of it. The godlike complex his little followers thrust on him, elevates him above his peer group, giving him a sense of purpose and responsibility. It's only due to his innate contradictions, that it all ultimately falls apart.

Up & Coming Pop Punk Bands | Splitsville

Splitsville are an emo/grunge-infused pop punk band who hail from Exeter, UK. Since their formation in October 2014 the trio have been writing relentlessly and playing live shows which highlight the raw intensity of their sound. We asked the promising young band a few questions to get to know more about them and what influences their sound: 

WHERE ARE YOU FROM? 
We are from Exeter in the UK. 

HOW DID YOU FORM? 
Jordan (vocals): I put an ad up asking if anyone wanted to start a band that sounded like The Story So Far, then Joe (drums) put an ad up asking if anyone wanted to start a band sounding like Counterparts. Then we met up and wrote a load of songs that sounded kinda like Modern Baseball, then Jim (bass) joined and we now we kinda sound like Hindsights. 

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH YOUR BAND NAME? 
It's taken from the La Dispute song 'For Mayor in Splitsville.' 

WHERE CAN WE FIND YOUR MUSIC AND HAVE YOU GOT ANY PLANS FOR NEW MUSIC IN THE FUTURE?
Last week we released our first single 'I'll Be Fine' on Bandcamp for free download. We're currently discussing options for recording our first EP, we're hoping to have it out before the end of the summer.

Pop Punk to Listen to This Summer

Although we've had some pretty hot weather in the UK, it has still managed to rain almost every other day. It's like someone is trying to punish us for our bad teeth and obsession with tea. For this reason we have decided to bring you some truly awesome pop punk to brighten the summer months and make you feel like you're on Californian beach (Skateboard and Khaki shorts optional). We've compiled a list of new albums, EPs and  just general summery songs that we hope will make your summer a little less like a giant accumulation of rain and thunder storms. 

Handguns - Life Lessons
If you haven't listened to Life Lessons yet, stop what you are doing right now and find whatever medium you usually use to listen to music and put that shit on right now.  Although only 28 minutes long, Life Lessons is packed with huge pop punk anthems that are perfect for summer time. Imagine all the best parts of their previous releases Angst and Don't Bite Your Tongue combined to make a spotless album which will leave you begging them to come and tour in the UK ASAP. 





Firestarter - Forget The Past
Hailing from Albany New York this means that Firestarter already share a home with bands such as State Champs and With the Punches (R.I.P). In May of this year the band released their EP Forget the Past, which is an essential accessory to any pop punk summer. It's pretty much a fast paced, gang vocal filled EP of perfection which you can buy for the equivalent of about £3





Candy Hearts - All The Ways You Let Me Down
It's a shame there are not more female fronted pop punk bands in existence but Mariel, Matthew and John are doing a good job of showing what wonderful things can happen when you have a female vocalist. All The Ways You Let Me Down is a mix of sugary pop punk reminiscent of New Found Glory or Blink 182. Speaking of New Found Glory, Chad Gilbert produced the album and his influence is evident throughout. If you love pop punk with super catchy lyrics and upbeat riffs, you should definitely give this a listen.   

Four Year Strong -Go Down In History
It's been three years since Four Year Strong have released anything and let's be honest, we have missed them a lot. Some fans were disappointed by the release of In Some Way Shape or Form. However, it seems that for the release of Go Down In History, Four Year Strong are coming back better than ever. This will be FYS's first release since they signed to Pure Noise Records and from listening to the songs they've put out already, it seems like they're returning to their roots. Go Down in History is released July 22nd. 




Stanley and the Search - Weightless
Stanley and the the Search recently released the follow up to their debut self titled. Weightless is a remastered version of their EP Weight. Although the album cover is cloudy, look at those palm trees, it has summer written all over it people. The band took a different direction to their debut; Weightless provides the listener with heavy, aggressive pop punk that has the potential to become catchy at any moment. If you're a fan of citizen, Polar Bear Club or Make Do and Mend you definitely need this album to complete you summer.




Smalls - Tired 
Smalls are another female fronted  pop punk band that we are massive fans of (complete with female drummer). Their first EP, Expecting the Worst, was practically the best thing you will ever hear so you can imagine our excitement when they released their new song Tired. To make it even better the video for Tired (Click on title) is a parody of The Get Up Kids video for Action and Action complete with dangly ceiling telephone and everything. Make sure you pick up a copy of Small's new EP when it's released.




Forever Came Calling - Indebted
Forever Came Calling aren't releasing their new album until September, but until then the band have released the single Indebted. The track is a catchy mixture of upbeat guitar riffs and lyrics. Forever Came Calling's new album is a follow up to their last album Contender. The new one, 'What Matter's Most', was produced and engineered by Kyle Black (New Found Glory, Comeback Kid) and will be available by Pure Noise Records on September 9th. 





Me vs Hero - I'm Completely Fine 
Me vs Hero are another band that we had been missing until they started putting out new tracks from their upcoming album - I'm Completely Fine. The band have currently released three tracks from the album - Marks of a Slave, Things We Know and Opposites and each song  has been epic. The only thing we're disappointed about is that the album isn't released until September but the three songs are enough to keep us going until then. Also, look at that artwork - it's practically the British summer summed up - a man standing in the sea fully clothed with an umbrella. 



Real Friends - Maybe This Place Is The Same and We're Just Changing
Pop Punk/ emo favourites Real Friends are releasing their debut album this summer and from what we've already heard it looks like it's going to be awesome. The band have already released Loose Ends, Sixteen and I Don't Love You Anymore all of which sound like the typical heart on sleeve lyric, pent up emotion, Real Friends songs we love. And don't fear, the sleepy eyes/ bony knees references have not disappeared. 






Homebound - Coming of Age
Homebound have spent a year writing the songs which make up their debut EP 'Coming of Age'. The EP consists of songs penned about regret, learning from past experience and just growing up in general. The outcome has resulted in an excellent EP that is an impressive first release from the band. Homebound's EP is also perfect for summer so make sure you get your copy. Also, if you want to go to a show but have no money, Homebound are participating in a free tour this September with As It Is and Like Torches. To find out more click here.  




The Story So Far - Songs Of 
Who knew that The Story So Far had a soft side? With all this beating up of security guards it's a hard to believe that TSSF are capable of putting out an EP with the capability of singing a newborn baby to sleep. Of course we have seen this side before on Placeholder and Clairvoyant but this EP is just simply beautiful. If you're having trouble sleeping through humid summer nights just put this on, it will work much better than counting sheep. 





Nathan Detroit - Peace of Mind
Nathan Detroit are releasing their new EP on August 11th. The band who hail from Trowbridge in the UK have a mixture of melodic riffs and heartfelt lyrics (listen to The Way Down) and also display catchy, upbeat songs such as 17 (Although this was released lat summer it's still great). Nathan Detroit have also been playing dates alongside ROAM, Light You Up and As It Is and will also be touring this summer. Find out more here.

Rust Belt Lights - Religion and My Ex
Rust Belt Lights released Religion and My Ex in February of this year and although the cover is quite dark, this deserves a place in this list. You know those albums you wish you had a soft top car for and you could put the roof down and play it really loud. This is that album. The album is full of fast paced drums, an abundance of energy and catchy lyrics. Our favourites include Old Ghost and How to Live Without which are perfect for summer. 





Aaron West and The Roaring Twenties - We Don't Have Each Other
Dan 'Soupy' Campbell from The Wonder Years recently started a side project called 'Aaron West and the Roaring Twenties'. Although it's extremely different from TWY (think acoustic guitars, harmonicas and country-esque music) if you're a big TWY fan, then it's definitely worth checking this out. The album - We Don't Have Each Other - sold 30,000 copies in the first week and was 89 on the American Billboard charts which is pretty impressive for a side project. Trash Boat - Look Alive 
Trash Boat have only officially been a band since the beginning of 2014 but from listening to Look Alive, you would never have guessed it. As Trash Boat's first musical endeavor, the EP shows no hint of weakness and is an impressive mixture of memorable melodies, youthful affirmations and an abundance of energy; the perfect musical accessory for summer. Trash Boat have also played a number of dates supporting ROAM on their UK tour this summer. Fear not if you have missed out as the band are playing shows throughout the next coming months. Knuckle Puck - The Weight That You Buried
Summer is not summer without Knuckle Puck. Whether you're listening to The Weight That You Buried, Don't Come Home or their recent split with Neck Deep, Knuckle Puck will definitely brighten up your summer. Knuckle Puck also recently released a new video fro their song No Good (click on the link above to watch), which was directed by Eric Teti, the same person who directed Real Friend's video for I Don't Love You Anymore. 





Seaway - Hoser
Although Hoser was released in 2013, it definitely belongs in any summer playlist. Especially as the band just got signed to Pure Noise Records. You could argue that 'Keep your stick on Ice' means that it should belong in a winter playlist but we're going to put it in here because nothing makes you feel more summery than an album that sounds like a modern spin on old blink 182. Seaway also released a new video for No Direction from the album which you can watch by clicking on the link above. 



No Sleep Records - A Comp For Mom
No Sleep Record's president/ founder Chris Hansen is releasing a compilation in memory of his mum who sadly passed away this year. The comp is limited to a 1000 copies and all proceeds go towards his mum's medical bills and any left over will go to the Linda Hansen memorial fund. The compilation features a previously unreleased full band version of the Living Room Song by The Wonder Years (Listen out for the Modern Baseball shoutout), an acoustic version of Montreal by Major League and a previously unreleased b-side from the Swellers.





Seasons Change - Nothing and Everything EP
Seasons Change hail from Pico Rivera California and even the cover to Nothing and Everything is sunny. Just Look at it. Although this was released last year it deserves a place on any summer playlist. The band also recently got signed to No Sleep Records and are recording their debut full length with Sam Pura at the Panda Studios. Sam Pura + Panda Studios + awesome band can only equal one thing: one fucking awesome album.  





Like You to Me - Bigger Jaws
Like You to Me, who we think are named after the Set Your Goals Song of the same name, recently released their new song Bigger Jaws which features a special guest. Yep, that's right New Found Glory's Jordan Pundik lends some guest vocals to Bigger Jaws. In fact, the singer sounds a lot like him so it's like a buy one get one free of Jordan Pundik's which we're definitely not complaining about. Also, look at the shark on the cover that has summer written all over it, right? Okay maybe not but the song is a pretty good one to put on your summer playlists.

Neck Deep Interview

Neck Deep describe themselves as "some honest, down to earth pop punk from the UK" and we can't put it better ourselves. Since bursting onto the scene this quintet have released two successful EPs and have recently signed to Hopeless Records, home of The Wonder Years, All Time Low, Yellowcard and more. So on the eve of a big tours with The Wonder Years and releasing their debut album we caught up with bassist Fil Thorpe-Evans to find out what's next for Neck Deep!

Hi Neck Deep! Thanks for doing this interview, we’re gonna start by saying a massive congratulations for signing to Hopeless Records! How awesome was that for you guys and how did it come about?

Thank you very much! It’s on an unfathomable level of awesomeness to be honest! When I first heard there was even contact and there was interest from Hopeless, I pretty much spent the rest of the day giggling like a little girl at the very thought of it. But basically I think it was common knowledge that we were unsigned, and doing a full length and our recent trip to the states to play a couple shows opened some eyes I believe. The shows sold out and the footage online spread pretty fast, I believe they saw some of that and it just started very casually with them wanting to just chat to us about it, learn more about the band and everything progressed naturally from there. Couldn’t be more stoked.

Will signing a record deal change anything about Neck Deep?

Not at all, which is one of the things we found most exciting about Hopeless and what made us feel like it was the perfect fit. They are so keen to help us find what we wanna be, how we wanna do things and how they can help us reach that goal, with them on side as one big team. They aren’t in it to change people. They made it clear in the early stages they want to help find out a band’s mission statement and make it the goal of the whole process, and follow how we see the band, rather than trying to rebrand it or change anything. Plus a lot of the material for the full length was wrote before the signing even came about, so it can’t have changed any of that.

What’s next for Neck Deep? We hear you’re in the process of making a new album?

Yeah we are at the back end of the process to be honest, we are at the stage now of getting mixes back and tweaking them and such. All that’s left after that is mastering and the process is done, so it’s basically a wrap in some respects.

How will your next release differ from ‘Rain in July’?
I feel like it’s a much more mature sound. I hate saying clichés like ‘we really found our sound’ but it really does apply. I feel like it’s still everything people love about us, but refined into a more solid vibe. I don’t want to give much away at this stage so I’ll just say we really feel like it will open eyes to our bands growth and potential. It’s most certainly not the same songs you have heard from us before and it has a lot more variety than our other 2 EP’s.

How do you approach the writing process?
We have a pretty much set in stone process that we feel works for us so it’s the same model each time. Either me or Lloyd (usually Lloyd) writes an instrumental track, we record it sketchy with program drums, then give it to Ben and he just writes lyrics and melodies over it. He then brings it to us and goes ‘here’s what I have’. Sometimes we kinda play with ideas and change things up a bit, but 99% of the time we just love what he has for it and that’s the song done. It’s a pretty standard model for writing a song I believe, there is no mad secret to our method.

You chose to release Rain in July on vinyl, which is starting to see resurgence in popularity, what were your reasons for this?

Well the resurgence in popularity I guess is an accidental by-product of the vinyl release as we took pre-orders for the vinyl literally months ago. It was always supposed to go out on vinyl, but we ended up having problems with who was supposed to release it, plans fell through and circumstances changed so it took a long time to resolve that problem.

Do you prefer recording or playing live?

Playing live for sure, recording is good fun and being in the environment where you can hear a song come to life on record that you have worked over for a period of time is great. But playing that song live, seeing people singing back to you and seeing people connect with that song you have written, is the best feeling in the world.

In November you’re touring with The Wonder Years, how did that come about and are you looking forward to it?

I’m not too sure exactly how that came about to be honest, we just got offered it! But we are so stoked for it, literally buzzing. We all are massive fans of The Wonder Years and of Real Friends also. Plus the ticket sales are doing amazing and most of the venues have been upgraded in size, which has never happened to a tour we have been a part of!

Who is the fussiest person in the band on tour when it comes to washing etc?

Dani for sure. He is a little girl when it comes to this. Everyone likes being able to shower but if it’s not possible you just get on with it, but he will throw a paddy if he can’t have one. He is just generally the most fussy about everything on tour really. To make it fair though I will be honest and say that in the same light I’m the least fussy about showers, probably so much that’s it a bad thing. I’ll go a few days which is pretty gross.

You guys are known for your partying, what are your worst drunken habits and do you have any funny stories?

I was unaware we are known for our partying! That’s pretty funny though. Oh my lord I could write an essay on this subject. Drunken habits… just loads and loads of drunk dancing and singing, we all love to dance when we drink. Even if there isn’t music we will just dance. Stories though… we went to this club night after a show on one tour and all got severely drunk. This place called ‘Kasbar’.  The night went down in Neck Deep history for the events that transpired. I won’t go into too much details but we all got really really drunk- Dani did something gross on Ben’s pillow and I threw up everywhere. I won’t be any more specific than that. 

 All of you come from different parts of the UK, how did you form?

Well Lloyd and West were in a hardcore band called Spires. I met them through another band I was in called Climates and I ended up playing bass for Spires on their last tour. Ben is the brother of Seb Barlow who did all of Spires recording and had all been friends for years. Dani was some great drummer kid from the internet they got sort of recruited really.

What are your top five favourite pop punk albums?
Holy crap, I really can;t even answer that, just Blink, New Found Glory and Sum 41 records. 


Where is the best place you’ve ever toured?
Well we didn’t really ‘tour’ Florida, but we played shows there and it was incredible, other than that we have only toured the UK. But we are going Australia in November!

Who are your favourite upcoming bands from the UK right now and why?

Climates, melodic hardcore band from Lincoln have a couple EPs out which are awesome. Roam are another sick pop punk band we have played with that are ones to watch. Me Vs Hero aren’t really upcoming but they have a new record coming out which I’m looking forward too.

You guys have grown in popularity massively since you formed, what do you put this down to? Devilish good looks, gigging, or just hard work and talent?

Certainly the devilish good looks. Nothing else. Just kidding, I think just really positive word of mouth, we just made music we enjoyed and happened to do something people enjoy a lot. If people are super into something you don’t really need to push people to share something they just do it naturally. I think our band is just a perfect example of the science behind the snowball effect.

Pop Punk is often affiliated with pizza, what are your favourite pizza toppings?
Pepperoni and jalapenos! There is a place near me that I recently discovered makes a Nandos piri piri pizza! So im going to try that this week, so this answer might change next week.

If US Pop Punk is associated with pizza, what food do you think UK Pop Punk should be associated with?

If it’s gotta be proper british then probably fish and chips… or maybe tea and crumpets. Both of which I really like so I’m cool with that. 

Interview with Well Planned Attack

Well Planned Attack is an Italian band which formed in March 2012 and is made up of four members: Fabio on Guitar & Vocals, Perez on Guitar, Manuel on Bass and Julien on Drums. Their EP is due to come out around spring this year and they released their first song 'Won't Stand Down' on the 20th December 2012 which can be found on Youtube, Spotify and iTunes.

1. What other bands influence you?

Julien: The bands that influence us most are Blink 182, Fall Out Boy, Simple Plan and Four Year Strong

 

Fabio: Our sound obviously comes from other pop punk bands, while for the lyrics I also get inspired by rap music. In this period I'm listening to a lot of Huey Mack's stuff

 

2. What are the themes of your upcoming EP, and who would you compare yourselves to in terms of other bands? 

Perez: Our EP is basically a mixture of the pop punk sound and the lyrics that inspire us the most at the time. We get influenced by the bands we like but we always try to write music that sounds new and fresh to the listener. The lyrics are mostly about our everyday life, we are not 16 anymore so it's not all about parties and girls who don't love us back, but we have to deal with the struggles that real life puts infront of you when you're in your 20's, regarding work, life changes and obviously relationships...

4. Do you have any funny band stories from rehearsals etc.?
Julien: Last december we had a photoshoot and the only one of us who had the photographer's number was Manuel. The day before, whilst working, Manuel got a text from Perez and, taking the phone out his pocket, accidently dropped it on the floor. At that point the phone was still working but its display was broken and it was impossible to read anything on it, so he had the brilliant idea to place the phone on the floor and drive over it with a forklift a few times thinking it was the funniest thing ever. The only problem is that the day later we couldn't find the photographer because the only way we could contact him was in the smashed phone! Fortunately in the end it went fine.

5. How did you form Well Planned Attack?
Fabio: I used to play in another pop punk band previously, but we had a few problems with the drummer and we broke up. A few days later I was talking to Perez about the fact I wished there were more people as commited to music as him in my area, in order to start a new band. At that point the idea to start a band came together in our minds.

Perez: I'm very proud about how we started the band, because the strange thing is that me and Julien live 45 minutes away from Manuel's hometown and more than 2 hours away from Fabio's college town. If it was 20 years ago we wouldn't even be a band right now, or even know each other. I knew Fabio from a Blink 182 forum back in 2004. Last year we decided to start this band despite the distance, recording solo demos and sending them to the other members. This is a very unusual method for underground bands, which usually meet with their members in a rehearsal room and write songs together. Julien used to play in my previous band so I asked him if he want to join, then we got in touch with Manuel who liked the demos and decided to join us.

Manuel: I used to play in another band as well, but I soon got tired because it was not my kind of music. Then three dumb guys got in touch with me telling me they were looking for a handsome and virtuoso bass player...so here I am!

Julien: The truth is we found him in a hospice wearing his one-piece pyjamas.

6. How is pop punk perceived in your home country of Italy? Is it as popular as it is in the UK and USA?
Perez: Not really...there's no pop punk on tv or national radio. It used to be popular between 2006 and 2010 but it was just a temporary trend, so like every temporary trend, it ended.

Fabio: Pop punk in Italy is not even half as big as it is in the UK and USA, but I'd say that it is slowly getting bigger and bigger...and I would also say it's getting better and better. There are really good Italian bands, like Notimefor and Vanilla Sky.

7. How did you come up with your band name?
Perez: Fabio came up with the name around May. I liked it since the beginning and although we had other names we kept Well Planned Attack till the end.

Fabio: Yes, the name is my fault. The band name is actually a line from 'Scary' by The Movielife, a pop punk band from the Drive Thru Records era. I guess it doesn't fit us very well given that we aren't good at planning and we always end up delaying stuff, but we promise this won't be the case with our EP.

8. What inspired your album artwork?
Fabio: We still don't have definite artwork for the EP, but I think it'll be funny and colourful...I'd like to include a unicorn too...and a burrito. I love burritos!

9. Who does most of the song writing in the band? Do you find it difficult?
Perez: It's definitely not easy because as I said before, we can't write songs together in the same room. Each member of the band records demos on his PC and sends it to the other members. If it sounds good, we keep working on it in the preproduction and we do the last touches in the studio.

Fabio: I did most of the songwriting for this EP, no wonder I'm the one with the worst grades at college in the band now. Anyway, the most difficult part in writing a song is writing a good chorus. I come up with thousands of intro riffs every day, but when it comes to the chorus I have to rely on my band mates to help.

10. Do you get to spend much time together? Do you get along well?
Perez: Sadly, we can't meet very often because of the distance and because we're all busy with work and studies, but every time we do meet there is always a totally funny atmosphere.

Julien: I wish we could meet more often!

Fabio: Since we live quite far away we can't see each other frequently, but when we do we have the best time. However, we are always keeping one another in contact via technology, for example we have a private group on facebook where we post hundreds of stupid things on a daily basis. We really can't wait to tour and have fun together.

Manuel: I love posting stupid stuff on that facebook group, I just posted a video of some guys losing the engine of the boat they're on in the middle of the sea, I can't stop laughing!
