Up and Coming Pop Punk Bands | We Were Sharks

Canadian band, We Were Sharks, have just released their new EP which includes two tracks of fast-paced, upbeat, melodious pop punk. We asked them a few questions about their new EP, how they formed and their favourite pop punk albums...

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

The band is based out of Ottawa, Ontario—the grand ol’ capitol of our country of Canada.  But, as members we range from the provinces of Ontario to Quebec to even the island of Newfoundland.

HOW DID YOU FORM? 

Everyone knew each other from past bands and touring.  Eventually, we realized we didn’t completely hate each other and we all had the same goals. So, we thought it’d be pretty cool to make some music together.  

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH YOUR BAND NAME?

Well, we used to be called ’Sharks!’, at the time there was a band being signed to Rise Records with the same name. Someone said something along the lines of “Well, I guess we were sharks”.  And for some reason, we just went with it

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW EP...

We’ve been hard at work for the entire year of 2014 putting together new material and working on a bunch of stuff that we’re stoked to get to the public.  But, we really wanted to get SOMETHING out there.  So, we were pretty stoked on these two tracks and thought, instead of waiting any longer, lets drop a short EP for starters

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SONG FROM YOUR NEW EP AND WHY?

I’d say ‘Run For Cover’.  Besides the fact that it’s major fun to play; Randy had trouble writing lyrics for it.  When we were in the studio, he just started singing and everything he was feeling just came out.

DO YOU PREFER RECORDING OR PLAYING LIVE?

Playing live for sure.  We’re pretty out-of-shape dudes, so, it gives us a moment to get sweaty and work off whatever terrible things we pumped into ourselves that day.

IF YOU COULD PLAY A SHOW WITH ANYONE WHO WOULD IT BE?

New Found Glory. That’s always an easy answer.
