The follow up to their well received 2013 E.P Creepy, Reasons Not To Sleep sees Southampton’s Miss Vincent switching it from creepy to gloomy. Playing their self-styled ‘moody punk rock’, paying homage to the likes of Alkaline Trio and AFI, RNTS see them take their craft to the next level. “The songs we wrote for this record have a much darker, aggressive, and unhinged feel to them,” says Alex Marshall, lead vocalist and guitarist. As they gear up for release on 11th May via Engineer Records, they discuss the creation of the artwork…
Creating artwork is actually one of my favourite parts of being in a band, whether it’s for tour posters, t-shirts or EP covers. For the ‘Reasons Not To Sleep’ artwork we worked with the very talented Joshua Kelly AKA J-Monster Art. I think I found his page on Facebook one afternoon, had a look through some of his work and really liked his style. There was a Wednesday Addams and an Evil Dead inspired piece that he’d done which totally sold it for us. He takes influence from guys like Godmachine and Dan Mumford, some other great artists that we’re fans of.
Aesthetically we wanted the cover to be very dark and moody and make sure it reflected the tone of the music. We originally planned to use a photograph rather than getting something illustrated like we did for our first EP ‘Creepy’, just to do something different, but after throwing some ideas around we realised illustration was the way to go.
The concept came from an EP title we were playing around with which was ‘Into The Dark’, which was intended to reflect our move into darker musical territory. I had this idea of a guy with a light bulb for a head about to turn off a light switch, just to represent the idea of light vs. dark / positivity vs. self-deprecation, which is a big part of 'Reasons Not To Sleep'.
We told J-Monster what we wanted to create, he sketched an idea and we went from there; we asked for some small changes along the way but mostly we just let him do his thing. I think he totally got what we wanted to do and he was the perfect guy for the job. Reasons Not To Sleep is out May 11th via Engineer Records! Check out the single, 'How Much Further?' below:
Today for our up and coming pop punk bands post we have German band, Planet Zero. The guys have just released their new EP, Origin, which is full of cheerful, buoyant and summery songs, perfect for fans of All Time Low, Forever the Sickest Kids or Mayday Parade. We asked the guys a few questions and let them tell us about their new EP... WHERE ARE YOU FROM? Benny: We are a German band based in Stuttgart and Mannheim, really in the south of the country. HOW DID YOU FORM? Benny: Ferdi and I were playing in a band called Logomat for nearly nine years. We ended this project last year. But there was always this idea of a pop punk band with a pretty easy life. So i came up with this plan about Planet Zero in my head. Which is a planet where the life is easy and we can do whatever we want. I even created a beer we called Zero Brew. So the idea became more and more alive and I wrote some songs that I think fit in this world pretty much. During this time I told Danny and Marius about this idea and they joined in immediately.
Danny: During college Benny, Marius and me became good friends. Some day Benny just came up with this band idea and convinced us right from that point. After some days he introduced us to Ferdi who is the best guys ever. We call him the beast cause he is packing our hole backline with just one hand!
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH YOUR BAND NAME? Benny: It was basicly an idea I came up with during studying. It was all about this thing to do and not care about the stuff that sucks every day. I was thinking about a place where you can just enjoy your life and don’t care about all the conventions. So the name Planet Zero was born. TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW EP 'ORIGIN'
Benny: We went to the studio this winter in January and February. We had a bunch of songs we recorded. All of them are basically about stuff that happens on our planet. Like our own beer I talked about before, girls, parties, drinking and so much more. We hope the people out there will like it. We put a lot of emotion in it. Maybe one thing which was pretty hard is that we had just one week in the studio.
Danny: Our debut EP "Origin" was the first identification stage for us as the new band. We tried to find our sound, our own style and to bring in the influences of each and everyone of us in it. It has 5 tracks with a range from summer feelings to hard guitar riffs. The recording and mixing were made by ourselves. Benny is a music producer, so we have a real expert on board.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SONG FROM ORIGIN AND WHY?
Benny: Pretty much "Home" because this one gets stucks in my head all the time and I love to play the song live on stage. We just came up with our lyric video for this song.
Ferdi: Hot shots cause I’m more into harder music like A Day to Remember or BMTH and I think that song is just awesome.
Marius: As drummer I prefer Zero Brew cause it’s a fun punk summer song and as a drummer it makes it a lot of fun to play the song live.
Danny: In my earlier days I was more into acoustic music. I still love this kind of music so Lipstick & Champange is my favorite one from this record
WHO IS THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE FOR YOU AND WHY?
Benny: Other bands like All Time Low, You Me At Six, Fall Out Boy and so many others. We all party when we hear their songs coming up on the radio (that is pretty rare in Germany) or the CD player. And there are so many other great bands we would love to play with one day.
Danny: Big influences for us are bands like: All Time Low, You Me At Six or A Day To Remember. With their songwriting and the precision in their mixes, they all are paragons for us. We all own all of their albums and have seen every live DVD.
IF YOU COULD PLAY A SHOW WITH ANYONE WHO WOULD IT BE?
Benny: All Time Low!!!
Danny: I agree, that All time low, with all of their fun on stage, would be the best band to play with. It is a big dream for all of us, maybe we will be lucky one day and get the chance.
WHAT ARE YOUR TOP FIVE FAVOURITE POP PUNK ALBUMS?
Band: Wow this is so difficult to say there are so many great bands with awesome records. Maybe this are the top 5 we listen most to at the moment
All Time Low - Nothing Personal You Me at Six - Sinners Never Sleep Mayday Parade - Monsters in the Closet Simple Plan - Still not getting any Fall Out Boy - American Beauty/American Psycho
Origin is out now! Check out the new lyric video for the single 'Home' below:
Last month, Forever Came Calling headed across the Atlantic to play a handful of shows with Light You Up, Hit the Lights and Four Year Strong on the Pure Noise Records Tour in the UK. After their astonishing first album Contender, last October the guys released their second album, What Matters Most, an album which was comprised of fast-paced, melodic pop punk anthems. We sat down with vocalist Joe Candelaria to talk about their first time in the UK, What Matters Most, and Joe's favourite albums of all time...
HOW HAS THE TOUR BEEN GOING SO FAR?
Joe: It’s been awesome, really cool.
PPUK: HOW HAVE YOU BEEN FINDING YOUR FIRST TIME IN THE UK?
Joe: It’s been awesome. We slept last night for the first time since we’ve been here so that was good but we were kind of like running ourselves, just like go, go, go and then finally last night we got a Travelodge in Manchester and it was super nice to sleep. So everyone woke up and was like ‘I love this country’. At the beginning yesterday everyone was like ‘Oh my god, I just want to sleep’. We’ve been here for four days, we got off the flight, jumped into our van, drove to pick up the gear and drove three or four hours to Leeds, played the show, partied, which was not smart, slept at a friend’s house, got up, went to the next show, did the same thing, partied – not a good idea – then we all kind of slept. There’s nine of us in our van, so we slept in a room that was like two metres by two metres big, you know what I mean? (laughs). It was the tiniest room we were just sleeping with no blankets. It’s been an experience, it’s been fun though.
PPUK: HAVE YOU HAD A NANDOS YET?
Joe: We’ve been in Australia but we haven’t been here.
PPUK: IN YOUR AUSTRALIAN VIDEO DIARIES YOU WERE ASKING PEOPLE ABOUT NANDOS, WE HAD NO IDEA THEY HAD NANDOS IN AUSTRALIA?
Joe: We’ve heard it’s better here. That’s mine and John’s (Swaba, Bass) favourite place to eat in the world. It’s very rare that there’s fast food you eat and you don’t feel like shit. You’re just like ‘I don’t feel terrible’.
PPUK: HAVE YOU NOTICED ANY WEIRD DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE UK AND THE US? FOR EXAMPLE, IN THE US THE GAPS BETWEEN THE TOILET DOOR AND THE CUBICLE ARE REALLY WIDE...
I think the big one, for me, is driving on the roads here. It’s essentially set up for three cars and the passing line is for both sides and I’ve never seen that. We were going head on with someone, I was like ‘we’re gonna die’ and then that guy just went to the side and I was like ‘okay, that’s how you guys do it’. That’s been a cool difference, everyone is trying to look out for each other and get somewhere, that’s cool.
PPUK: THIS WILL BE THE FIRST TIME PEOPLE IN THE UK HAVE HEARD YOU PLAY THE SONGS FROM 'WHAT MATTERS MOST', HOW HAVE PEOPLE BEEN REACTING?
Joe: It’s been really good. Last night we played ‘Rather Be Dead Than Cool’ for the first time ever and that was awesome. It had a great reaction, so it’s been really cool actually. I’m excited.
PPUK: YOU GOT THE ALBUM TITLE FROM A CHARLES BUKOWSKI QUOTE?
Joe: Yes, ‘what matters most is how well you walk through the fire’. It’s just like the basic concept of you can’t change what the world throws at you but you can change how you deal with it. You’re never going to be able to handle the variables or predict them, but you can react in the best way to those variables. You decide what affects you.
PPUK: IF YOU COULD PLAY A SHOW ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD WHERE WOULD IT BE?
PPUK: WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE SHOW TO PLAY EVER?
Joe: Chicago on the Pure Noise Records Tour last fall. It was just really cool, we've always just had a fun time in Chicago. It was just like a week before the record came out and the reaction was insane. It was one of those moments were I think 'We're a real band now, this is cool'.
PPUK: WHY DO ALL AMERICANS HAVE REALLY NICE WHITE TEETH?
Joe: Have you seen the south? Those people have all kind of fucked-up teeth, like Alabama? For me, I just have good genes (laughs).
PPUK: WHAT TOOTHPASTE ARE YOU USING?
Joe: Ah fuck, I don't know I forget to brush most days. I use crest, but braces...People use braces all the time in the States. Our guitar player, Isaac, if he would have stayed and finished high school, he would have had braces for three years, didn't do it, didn't get to keep the braces.
PPUK: HOW DO YOU KEEP YOURSELF ENTERTAINED ON THE ROAD?
Joe: Think of really dumb stuff to ask people in the van. I ask our guitar player, Tom, to tell me the amount of money I'd have to pay him to do something stupid and then I just try and make him go less than he asked for. It's good, it's a good game.
PPUK: WHAT ARE YOUR TOP FIVE FAVOURITE ALBUMS OF ALL TIME?
Joe: It changes but I'm going to have to say, probably the album that most affected me is Where You Want To Be by Taking Back Sunday. The second one would have to be Born in the USA, Bruce Springsteen. The third one would have to be Macklemore - The Heist. Four would have to be Cindy Lauper - The Body Acoustic which is an acoustic rendition of all of her hit songs, it's amazing. Adam Lazzara from Taking Back Sunday is actually on the album. Number five, I'm going to have to go with Blink self-titled. Listen to What Matters Most below:

Today for our up and coming bands post, we're bringing to you Under Fire who hail from the US. The band have just released their new EP 'Lessons' which is packed with fun, powerful and upbeat songs, complete with a classic pop punk sound. Vocalist, Josh Carley, kindly answered some questions for us so we could get to know a bit more about the band... 1. WHERE ARE YOU FROM? We are from Derry, NH 2. HOW DID YOU FORM? The band started early 2013 by jake (drummer) and Devin (guitarist). Ricky (bass) joined shortly after then recruited me! Adrien (guitar) later joined while we were working on our self titled ep that same summer 3. TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW EP 'LESSONS'... "Lessons" is a combination of songs that talk about basic struggles for young people. "Make or break" about just feeling aimless in life and how at times it can feel overwhelming. "Go for gold" is about being with someone that doesn't believe in the potential they have in themselves but trying to become a better person regardless even though it might not work out between the two people"Lesson learned" is about working hard for something despite others trying to pull you down and mustering up the strength inside to keep going regardless of the mistakes you may make along the way, because a lot of the times that's all you have. "Better days" is about dealing with the frustration of losing a loved one. 4. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SONG FROM 'LESSONS' AND WHY? My favorite song lyrically is "Better days". My mom committed suicide the summer of 2009 and it's been the hardest thing to deal with, even today. It's a very touchy topic I'm aware, but that song is me just pouring out my frustrations at myself and at her for how it's affected me and those that knew her. Overall lyrically I hope people can connect with the lyrics and apply them to their life in a positive way! 5. YOU RECENTLY PUT OUT A VIDEO FOR 'GO FOR GOLD' HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH VIDEO IDEA? The video idea for "Go for gold" started with the storyline of a relationship that was dragging both of the people down, eventually it ended with both of them going off their own separate ways with hope of the two people still being friends. Big thank you to Rob Nordberg for all the work he put into it! 6. IF YOU COULD PLAY A SHOW WITH ANY BAND WHO WOULD IT BE? If I could play with any band I would have to say Linkin park. I'm a huge fan of Chester Bennington's vocals. "Meteora" was one of the first cd's I ever bought, it influenced me a lot vocally. So yeah, playing with them would be incredible! 7. TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT UNDER FIRE WE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW... Something that would surprised you about us? Hmm, we all are over 20 and still love Pokemon! Who doesn't though? 8. WHAT ARE YOUR TOP FIVE FAVOURITE POP PUNK ALBUMS? My favorite top five pop punk albums of all time would be: Goldfinger "Disconnection notice" Neck deep "Wishful thinking" Mxpx "Before everything and after Four year strong "Enemy of the world" We are the in crowd "Weird kids" Lessons is out now (check it out here). You can also watch the video for 'Go For Gold' below:
The guys in Layby seem to have had a busy time recently. With the departure of their vocalist, Aaron John Bownes, who left to concentrate on becoming a dad, the vocals now lay in the hands of new member Miles Kent. The Nottingham pop punks are now releasing their second EP Life's Great Illusions after their awesome first release 'Bombsite' last year. If you're a fan of Neck Deep, ROAM or Six Time Champion, Life's Great Illusions is something you'd be silly to miss out on. The EP is pop punk with a heavier edge complete with a British accent...
The EP starts off with Soundcheck, a short-lived opener without any lyrics. It's upbeat, and is accompanied by chugging guitars which makes Soundcheck a great descent into the EP.
Chronic is up next which Layby recently released a video for (watch it below). The song has a deep-rooted heaviness while still maintaining a classic pop punk sound . Chronic is brisk, with enduring lyrics that will leave you singing along after only a few listens. The next song is Where I Stand. At first, the song appears to be a slower, more melodic track but the pace soon increases which creates a striking development throughout.
Kicking & Screaming is the most sentimental on the EP, with honest and expressive lyrics. The song is unhurried and the gang vocals three quarters of the way through are a nice touch, emphasising the sentiment of the song. Finally, Losing Faith is one of the standout tracks from the EP, it has a perfectpop punk formula; a summery, crisp riff, an upbeat tempo and sincere, heartfelt lyrics. Out of all the tracks this is the one that's most susceptible to being put on repeat. The chorus holds a prominent vocal melody that will leave it implanted in your memory.
Overall, Life's Great Illusions is a great EP. All of the songs have a flawlesspop punk construction with enough heaviness to add an extra compnent to the songs. The lyrics are heartfelt and the choruses are big. Layby have an excellent ability to tell a story with their songs. This, coupled with the awesome sound they've created, makes for a really engaging EP.
Life's Great Illusions is out April 20th but you can stream it in full here.
Turnover's new song, 'Humming' is streaming over on Vice. The song comes from their upcoming album Peripheral, which is set to be released on May 4th via Run For Cover Records. Check out 'Humming' here.
With the follow up to their well received 2013 E.P Creepy, forthcoming Reasons Not To Sleep sees Southampton’s Miss Vincent switching it from creepy to gloomy. Set for release on 11th May via Engineer Records, you can get a taste of what to expect via their track by track guide now…
“Reasons Not To Sleep is a dark record. It wasn’t a completely conscious decision to start with. The songs naturally took a gloomier direction, and we just went with it full tilt. All the newer material was much much faster, angrier, and more unhinged, and it felt more like “our” sound.
Production wise we really wanted to capture the frenetic energy of playing the songs live as well as the more ethereal, layered elements. Recording with Neil Kennedy at the Ranch in Southampton was a great fit, he really helped us layer the songs perfectly and created the depth and atmosphere we were looking for.
DNR: We toured a lot of these songs for almost a year before recording them, and the gang vocals in this one seemed to get people singing along almost immediately. Theme wise it’s just a panicked expression of hopelessness - it’s questioning whether everyone should just give up on you, but at the same time there’s a sense of hope that if you stick together you can rid yourself of that feeling.
Gradients of Grey: The roots of this song lie before Miss Vincent was even formed. It started as a little conversation with myself about perseverance, because at the time I didn’t have a band or anyone to form one with, just a burning desire to play. There’s a counterpoint between the relatively minimal verses and the big call and response chorus. We’re big Misfits fans too so any excuse for some good old “whoa”s really!
Disparate, Desperate: This wasn’t always a slow song. It was originally double the speed but didn’t sound quite right; Lawrie suggested slowing it down and the feel just clicked. It’s a lot of fun to play live because it’s sort of sinister and introverted in the verses, and the chorus lets out all that pent up aggression. And there's a rad guitar solo. The spooky riff at the start trails on perfectly from the weird segue from the song before. If you listen hard you can hear a little bit of eBow action underneath all the atmospherics that had Lawrie and Neil on their knees twiddling knobs on pedals for hours.
The lyrics in this are pretty broad. It’s that feeling of seeing people tread a known path in the hope of success and not wanting to follow, but having a horrible internal struggle that comes with it. When I wrote this I was questioning everything I was doing, wondering why this shitty feeling got worse as I got older. I was giving advice to someone very close to me, and I sort of stopped midway through a sentence because I realised that I could do with taking that same advice. In that sense there’s some positivity blended in. At the same time I was dealing with some health issues as well, that’s where the line about hospitals comes from.
Shogun Queen: Two and a half minutes of rage. It’s a pissed off song about how badly people can act towards each other, how they repeatedly take advantage of one another. We aimed to do as few vocal takes as possible to try and capture that raw, aggressive feel, and it worked out great.
How Much Further?: This was the first song from the EP that we played live. Even though no one had heard it it’s always gone down really well at shows and people seem to remember it, so for those reasons we chose it as the lead single. It was only once we got in the studio that we realised how fast we play it live, so it was probably the toughest track to record. The lyrics are essentially reflecting on the fact that life sometimes seems to wait until things are looking up to tear you down again. As though everything you aspire to is nothing more than a shadow that you’re chasing.
You Can't Spell Blame Without ME: This was the last song we wrote for the EP. It was a little strange for us recording this because it was the only song we hadn’t played live before, so it took shape purely in the practice room and the studio, but we were blown away by the outcome. We completely let rip on the last chorus and it's probably our favourite part of the EP. There's layers and layers of vocals and a super fuzzy drop tuned baritone guitar, which was more of Neil's input. It’s also a very personal song, looking at things in your life that are out of your control but you still blame yourself for. I have a lot of unexplained guilt that crops up in places on the EP, but more so here than anywhere.” Reasons Not To Sleep is out via Engineer Records on the 11/05/15!Check out the lead single 'How Much Further' here:
Today for our up and coming pop punk bands post we're bringing to you Guts who hail from Las Vegas. The band are about to release their new LP Matches Malone via Don't Leave California Records on April 14th. If you're a fan of fast-paced, up beat pop punk like Handguns or Forever Came Calling, Guts is definitely a band you should check out... WHERE ARE YOU GUYS FROM?
We are from Las Vegas, NV USA
HOW DID YOU FORM?
We were actually in a different band at the time. I [Kenny], was writing that other bands next album and I took a break and wrote a pop punk song.
That is how our song ‘Hesitation’ came. I then sent that to to our singer, Sean, and he wrote lyrics and it actually came out really good so we quit the other band to pursue Guts.
DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC IN FIVE WORDS FOR SOMEONE WHO'S NEVER LISTENED TO IT BEFORE....
Energetic, Fast, Melodic, Youthful but Mature
TELL US ABOUT YOUR UPCOMING LP 'MATCHES MALONE'...
We had so many small releases in past 2 years that we wanted to bring them all together to make them more accessible. We also were on tour when we released the Matches Malone EP so we didn’t really get a chance to have a good release for it. We recorded a few new tracks and added them to the EP and a split we did with Anchorless(Ca) and now are releasing it thru ‘Don’t Leave California Records’.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SONG FROM MATCHES MALONE AND WHY?
I think we all have a different one.
[Kenny] Matches Malone
[Andrew] Boxcutter
[Adam & Sean] House of Cards
[Doogie] Ogden Avenue
IF YOU COULD PLAY A SHOW WITH ANYONE WHO WOULD IT BE?
[Kenny, Andrew] blink 182 (with Tom Delonge tho)
[Adam] Pennywise
[Sean] Dru Hill
[Doogie] Bayside
WHAT ARE YOU TOP FIVE FAVOURITE ALBUMS?
Blink 182 - Take Off Your Pants and Jacket
Blink 182 - Dude Ranch
Anchorless - Bridges Burned, Lessons Learned

Matches Malone is out on April 14th, but you can listen to 'Ogden Avenue' from the release here:
The Story So Far have released a new song titled 'Solo'. The song comes from their upcoming self-titled album which is set to be released on May 19th via Pure Noise Records. Check it out below:
Today for our up and coming pop punk bands post we're bringing to you singer/songwriter Aaron Akeredolu who goes by the name of All For Amends. Aaron has just released a new EP titled 'Looking Out For When It Starts To Look Up' which is filled with 90s inspired indie pop punk tracks, influenced by the likes of The Starting Line, The Get Up Kids and The Wonder Years. Check out our interview with Aaron below: WHERE ARE YOU BASED?
I’m based in London, but I currently torn between London and Northampton as I go to University in Northampton but my stuff is all in London.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH YOUR NAME ALL FOR AMENDS? The name is kinda indicative of my cynical perspective of negative experiences whereby – I am all for positive things to happen in my life but until then I will deal with the all the negative and crap.
DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND IN FIVE WORDS FOR SOMEONE WHO'S NEVER LISTENED TO YOUR MUSIC BEFORE... Well… that’s interesting I’d maybe say it’s: Loser Oddball Acoustic Pop Punk, yeah I like that haha.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW EP 'LOOKING OUT FOR WHEN IT STARTS TO LOOK UP'... It has been a slow process releasing it. It’s basically three songs about the weird and transitional moments of 2012 which was an important year for me in becoming aware of the notion of the odd dynamics of the world that can squirm its way into the direction of a sixteen year old while they are trying to attempt to find their place somewhere. I’d definitely say it is a time capsule of that period. The EP was definitely on the backburner for a while due to delays with artwork and mastering and so on but it turned out exactly the way I wanted it to in the end.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SONG FROM 'LOOKING OUT FOR WHEN IT STARTS TO LOOK UP' AND WHY? I’d definitely say the first song “I’ve Got No Company Except Cynicism” which is about a brief period of insomnia I had where I was stuck in this haze of boredom watching snooker in the early hours of the morning and I’d just be thinking about nothing for hours. I think this song is my favorite because it was the first song where I became aware of the odd subtle nuances (in terms of songs structure) of the way I write songs, I’m not tooting my own horn or anything when I say that because I will never be like Chris Conley or Dave Mackinder but I think while writing that song it made me realize that hey, I have somehow encapsulated what I want to say accurately to how I had envisioned the song. Hearing the completion of that song was reaffirming in a way, when I heard it back it sounded gratifying hearing influences of the music I listen to supporting me in a way to voice what I wanted to in my own way.
DO YOU PREFER RECORDING OR PLAYING LIVE? I think there is an immediacy that I have always been drawn to with recording. The practice of just capturing a moment sonically is just awesome, but again with playing live there is a definite sacredness about that moment in the fact that again it is immediate and it will only happen once, plus playing to people is cool. There are perks of both but I’d say recording.
WHAT ARE YOUR TOP FIVE FAVOURITE ALBUMS? Well in terms of pop-punk I’d say 1) Frozen Over First In Line – Bangarang, 2) Through Being Cool – Saves The Day, 3) All I Have To Offer Is My Own Confusion – Fireworks, 4) This Time Next Year – The Movielife and 5) Brand New – Your Favorite Weapon
Look Out For When It Starts To Look Up is out now! Check it out below:
